Ants have a very highly developed social organisation, with a caste system made up of the following groups; workers (sterile females), fertile males and queens (fertile females).
Foraging worker ants cause a nuisance as they travel widely in search of food, following well-defined trails and clustering around the food source. Sweet foods are strongly preferred. It is in this search for food that they come to enter domestic premises although they nest outdoors (usually ingrass and walls and under paving).
